Marriage????!!!!!!

I was highly surprised by how quickly and forcefully Mr. Rochester asked Jane to marry him. It almost seemed like Mr. Rochester was asking her for some unknown reasoning, perhaps some sort of sick game he was playing. However, Jane’s reaction for the most part seeded calm and collective. I could understand why she doubted him and was questioning his motives. Mr. Rochester had been playing her heart, and then suddenly asks for her hand in marriage?!?! It seems somewhat cruel to me, letting her believe that he is going to marry another women, a women who is not his intellectual equal but only has outer beauty and wealth. Toying with Jane’s heart like this only made her passionate nature, more passionate. Jane had to believe that she would never be with the only man that she had ever loved. As a result, Jane’s passion burned brighter for Mr. Rochester. It was a fire in her that could not be extinguished, her love for Mr. Rochester. However, I feel as if that fire burned her in a negative way. She was caught between her head and her heart. Therefore, when Mr. Rochester finally did ask for Jane to marry him, it came as quite a shock and completely confused her.

Totally agree with that. I mean, it was just random as heck! "Will you marry me?" How did that come about anyway? I mean, what were they talking about that required such a question? They were talking about Jane moving to Ireland...and then WHAM! It was just, like, right there! Do you think she should?

I do believe that she should marry him. Although Mr. Rochester was seemingly playing a game with her, I can't help to wonder if he had to. I mean, here Mr. Rochester is falling inlove with his Governess? Perhaps he had to play such a game to please both parites, socity, and Jane. Mr. Rochester's feeling he kept secretive(of coures to please the socity)but to keep Jane guess wheather or not he really did love her. I'm sure he did not want it to seem like he had absolutly no interest in her at all. On the otherhand though, I could see why she shouldn't marry him. He's putting socity over the feelings of the women he loves!!!!! If Mr. Rochester loved her as much as it seems, he shouldn't have given a care to socity! He should of only focused his complete loyalty and love towards Jane.

I agree. I haven't gotten to the next chapter yet, but from the posts I've been reading, it seems as though Rochester tries to make her into something presentable. Like, "If you're going to be my wife, you at least have to dress like you're something worthy." I mean, what the fluff?

"Unknown reasoning"...I think you are wise to pick up on the bizarre 'forcefulness' with which Rochester proposes to Jane (after all that 'toying' which does seem particularly cruel--especially the Ireland part). but maybe what's going on here has less to do with his lack of sincerity--he does seem to love her--but with his realization of an as yet unrevealed impediment to their love.

We'll see.
